Barbara Woodward has spent years working in diplomacy. As the United Kingdom’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations since 2020, she has played a key role in addressing global issues including international conflict, climate change, and humanitarian crises.
Before her appointment to the UN, Woodward served as the UK’s Ambassador to China from 2015 to 2020. She was the first woman to hold that position. During her time in China, she worked on building trade partnerships and managing diplomatic relations, especially during events like the state visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to the UK in 2015.
At the United Nations, Woodward represents the UK in meetings of the Security Council and General Assembly. Her job includes delivering statements on behalf of the UK, negotiating with diplomats from other countries, and helping shape international responses to crises. She has been involved in discussions on the need for stronger global cooperation on climate goals.
In July 2023, Woodward served as President of the UN Security Council, a role that rotates monthly among its members. During that time, she led meetings on conflict prevention and humanitarian aid. She also spoke publicly about the need for the UN to remain effective in a fast-changing world.
Throughout her career, Woodward has focused on diplomacy through dialogue. She often stresses the importance of working with international partners to solve global problems. Her role at the UN continues to place her at the center of key decisions affecting international peace and security.
